Terms of Service

These are the terms for Deft, the free desktop app, and Deft Sync, the paid sync service. They are short and in plain language. If anything is unclear, ask at support@usedeft.com.

Using the app or creating a Deft Sync account means you agree to them.

Who we are

Deft is made by Oğuzhan Göregen, an independent developer. "We" and "us" in these terms mean that person.

The app

Deft is free. Use it for personal or commercial work on as many of your own computers as you like for as long as you like. Do not sell it, pass it off as your own or take it apart to build something from its code.

Your notes are plain files on your disk. They are yours. The app touches them only as you ask. The privacy policy lists the few network calls the app can make.

We take data loss seriously, but no software is perfect. Keep backups of the files you care about.

Your Deft Sync account

Deft Sync needs an account: an email address and a password. Keep the password to yourself and tell us if you think someone else has it. You must be at least 16, or the age of digital consent where you live. An account is for one person. Everyone in a household or team needs their own.

Your files are encrypted before they reach us, so we cannot look at what you store. We close an account only on a valid legal order or when it is used to attack the service or other people. If that happens we tell you why unless the law stops us.

Paying for Deft Sync

Deft Sync costs what the pricing page says, monthly or yearly. Your first subscription starts with a 14-day free trial. You add a payment method when the trial starts. The first charge falls when the trial ends and then at the start of each period. Cancel before the trial ends and you pay nothing.

Purchases are handled by Paddle.com Market Ltd, or another Paddle group company depending on where you live, as our reseller and merchant of record. Paddle takes your payment, works out tax, sends your invoice and processes refunds. Paddle's buyer terms cover the purchase. These terms cover the service.

Cancel any time from your account page. Sync keeps working until the end of the paid period and you are not charged again. For money back, see the refund policy.

If prices change you hear from us by email at least 30 days before the new price applies to you.

Your notes and your key

Everything you sync stays yours. We claim no rights to it beyond storing and delivering the encrypted copies you send. We could not read it if we wanted to. Files and file names are encrypted on your device with a key we never receive.

One consequence: if you lose every device that holds your sync key and have not kept the twelve-word Recovery Key the app gave you, the copy on our servers cannot be decrypted by anyone, including us. That is why the app asks you to write the key down.

Storage

Each account includes the storage listed on the pricing page. If you reach it the app tells you and pauses uploads until you free space. Nothing is lost. Deft Sync is for keeping your notes in step across your own devices, not a general file locker.

Availability

We aim to keep Deft Sync running around the clock but cannot promise it never goes down. Every synced device holds a full copy of your vault, so an outage means sync waits. Your notes stay open.

We give notice by email before removing anything you rely on. If we ever discontinue Deft Sync that notice is at least 90 days and we refund the unused part of any yearly subscription.

Liability

We are not liable for indirect losses such as lost profits or lost data from using Deft or Deft Sync. Our total liability to you is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before a claim. Where consumer law in your country gives you rights that cannot be limited this way, those rights win.

Changes to these terms

For anything beyond a clarification we email account holders at least 30 days before a change takes effect and move the date below. Using Deft Sync after that date means the new terms apply.
